My Autistic Kiddo

Tips and tricks to help you and your family!

Sensory seeker

There are so many different types of sensory needs for an autistic child. My daughter likes to spin, chew, teeth grind, head bobbing, and tight compression. Some things that I have found to help with her sensory seeking are:

Spinning-

This spinning chair is her absolute favorite!! She has so much fun and her giggles are contagious! It really gives her what she is seeking without the safety issue of standing and spinning into things. .

Chewing & Teeth Grinding-

There are so many different chew necklaces to try. Each kiddo is different. We tried all of the silicone necklaces and she wanted nothing to do with them but continued to chew on her clothes. That’s when I found these cloth necklaces and she loves them! Momma also loves that we are not destroying all of her clothes with bite marks anymore! It has also helped stop the random teeth grinding. I highly recommend this product!

Head Bobbing-

My daughter would just sit and bob her head back in forth for hours if we let her. I noticed it is something she does more when she is tired. This chair gives her the same rocking sensation but not as over taking as the head bobbing. She will take a book and sit and rock and be able to focus on what is in her hand instead of eyes closed and only head bobbing. It definitely helps give her the sensory she needs and helps her to focus more.

Tight Compression-

My daughter likes BIG TIGHT hugs! She was non verbal until she was 5 years old, so to hear her sweet little voice ask for “big hugs” melts my heart! She likes sliding her hands and feet under me when we are laying together and will sometimes give me her hand for me to squeeze. This tank top we love because unlike the compression vest it can be concealed under her cute little outfits but still gives her that big hug feeling. It definitely helps her to focus and stay calm. Her teachers at school have really noticed a difference in her behavior as well. We have less out burst and she is happy when wearing it!

This weighted blanket has helped us with bed time so much! I used to have to lay in bed with her at night and do deep compression squeezes all over her body to help her relax and fall asleep. Now with this blanket she gets that sensation all over! It is also so soft and warm! We truly love and recommend this blanket. It comes in different weights and sizes for your child’s size.
